Bike Safety: Braking
Here are a few ways to brake safely while bicycling:
- On level ground: apply moderate pressure to the front hand brake.
- Going downhill: apply pressure equally to the front and back hand brakes.
- Emergency (fast) stop: also known as the "panic stop." Slide back on your seat and get your body lower. Then apply more pressure to the front brake. If your back tire starts to skid, quickly reduce the pressure on the front brake, so you don't fly over the handlebar.
