You'd be hard-pressed to call the holidays "fitness-friendly" -- especially when travel takes you away from your home, your exercise routine and your gym.

But all's not lost. There are adjustments and solutions that can help you stay in shape even during holiday travel:

  • Do resistance exercises. No gym or free weights? No problem. You can still strength-train by doing basic exercises that use your body weight as resistance: push-ups, sit-ups, squats, lunges, to name just a few.
  • Squeeze those muscles in secret. Not as shady as it might sound. Isometric exercises involve contracting muscles, holding the contraction, and then releasing. And they can often be done without anyone around you noticing. Calf muscles (rise up on your toes), buttocks and abdominals can all be toned isometrically.
  • Take walks. By yourself or with family and friends, walking can be done virtually anywhere.
