Quinoa (pronounced KEEN-WAH) is one of the healthiest whole grains you can eat. Compared to other grains, it has more "complete" protein (meaning it contains more of the amino acids that comprise protein). In fact, the World Health Organization has rated quinoa protein as high in quality as milk protein. Quinoa is also an excellent source of iron, the B vitamins and potassium.

Quinoa can be used as a tasty alternative to rice in side dishes, rice-based salads, soups and other meals.

A finer point for you nutrition purists: Quinoa is technically a seed and not a grain. But it looks, tastes and is used like a grain -- and that's where you'll find it in the supermarket aisles.
