Jump for Your Health
Jumping rope is an excellent cardiovascular exercise and calorie-burner.
To maximize benefits and prevent injury, keep these pointers in mind:
- Jump like a boxer, not a child on the playground. Lift both feet off the floor at the same time rather than skipping over the rope one foot at a time.
- Make jumping rope as low-impact as possible. Instead of jumping on a surface like concrete, protect your legs and back by jumping on a surface with some "give," such as a rubber mat. Also, avoid landing too hard by making sure your feet come only 1-2" off the ground.
- Choose the right rope for your height. You'll know the rope is the ideal length if you can step on the middle of it and still comfortably hold the ends while touching them to the center of your chest.
