You may or may not have a choice of potatoes at your Thanksgiving meal. But if you do -- or if you're the cook -- sweet potatoes may be the way to go.

Here's why:

  • NUTRITION: Sweet potatoes are packed with beta carotene, thought to help fight some cancers and heart disease. Incidentally, sweet potatoes are richer in this nutrient than yams are.
  • VERSATILITY. You can mash them just as you would normal white potatoes. Better yet, bake them in their skins. If you eat the skins, you get a healthy amount of fiber -- good news if you're watching your weight.
  • CALORIC VALUE: Sweet potatoes are low-calorie. (Just be sure you don't add butter or white sugar in preparing them.)
