If you want to prevent heart disease, experts recommend avoiding trans fats. Often identified as "hydrogenated oils" on ingredients lists, trans fats are typically found in processed foods such as cakes, cookies and other snack items.

One of the biggest trans fat foods: margarine. Instead of spreading on the white stuff, dip your bread in olive oil. If you use margarine in cooking, substitute soy, canola or other plant-based oils.

Can't go cold turkey? Then gradually wean yourself by using tubs of soft margarine instead of the harder sticks. The soft varieties contain lower amounts of trans fats.
